like a broken window or door lock, a gas leak, a roof leak, or light fixtures or switches that pop, spark, or
have burn marks around them are the full responsibility of your landlord and that as a tenant you should
never, for your own safety attempt to fix these issues.

1. Cleaning the Range Hood Filter
Ever wonder where all those bacon fat and cooking odors go while your range hood fan is keeping them
from smelling up your apartment or settling on the surfaces of your kitchen? If you haven’t taken a good
look at your range hood filter lately, you might not be aware of all the gunk that collects in it over time.
In fact, regularly giving your range hood filter a good scrubbing with dish soap and scrub in the sink is
absolutely necessary to keep it clean. It’s also worth noting that if you don’t keep cleaning the range hood
filter, it will eventually get clogged and stop working properly, or at all. So give that filter a good scrubbing
now and then, and enjoy cleaner air, and less cooking odors!
2. Change the Direction of Your Ceiling Fans When the Weather Changes
Did you know that The direction switch on your ceiling fan should be changed with the changes of the
season? In summer the fan should blow air straight down, letting the heat rise. To accomplish this, you
need to set the switch so that the fan runs fast counterclockwise.
In winter you want your ceiling fan to pull cold air up, letting the hot air sink, and so you should run your
fan at a slow speed, going clockwise to keep as much heat in the room as possible.
Please note that you should never attempt to touch a ceiling fan until after it has been shut off and the
blades have stopped spinning completely.
3. Unclog Your Own Drains
This is one of those little fixes that can easily be done on your own without having to call the landlord, and
it saves you the time you’d otherwise spend waiting for your landlord to show up and fix it, or the time
spent waiting for a maintenance person or plumber to come and fix your drain.
Usually drains that stop working have a clog somewhere down the pipes with fat, grease, or hair stopping the flow of water.
Unclogging a drain is usually a relatively easy fix, and it will give you the freedom to go on with life as
normal, instead of having to stop using the drain in question until someone else has time to come check it
4. Changing the Light Bulbs in Your Apartment
Believe it or not; you do not need to call your landlord every time a light bulbs burns out in your
apartment. All you have to do is to make sure the bulb is cold before you touch it, then unscrew it, and
check the wattage needed for the light fixture, and bring the bulb to your local grocery or hardware store.
*Don’t forget to turn off the light switch before taking out the light bulb.
